Al-Mutawwal is a monumental work in Arabic rhetoric by the brilliant Imam Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani (d. 792H). The text is a detailed commentary that builds upon a chain of seminal works: it explains the Talkhis al-Miftah by Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini (d. 739H), which is itself an abridgment of the third part of Miftah al-'Ulum by Abu Ya'qub al-Sakkaki (d. 626H).
The book is an exhaustive exploration of the three sciences of Balaghah: 'Ilm al-Ma'ani, 'Ilm al-Bayan, and 'Ilm al-Badi'. Renowned for its logical precision and incredible detail, Al-Mutawwal became the ultimate advanced textbook for studying rhetoric in madrasas and universities across the Islamic world for centuries. Its scholarly rigor made it an indispensable reference, prompting generations of scholars to write numerous super-commentaries to unpack its dense content.
The Dar al-Lubab edition, verified by Dr. Diya' al-Din al-Qalash, presents Al-Mutawwal in a single large (A4 size) volume based on multiple manuscripts with extensive indices.
