Al-Huruf al-Muqatta’a are abbreviated letters that occur individually at the beginnings of some Surahs in the Qur’an and are written together like a word, but each letter is pronounced separately. They are also known as Fawātih (فواتح) or openers as they form the opening verse of the respective chapters. 29 Surahs contain these abbreviated letters.
