This book is written by Abu Hafs al-Fallas (d. 249 AH), one of the hadith scholars and masters of Jarh wa Ta'dil (criticism and authentication of Hadith narrators). In it, he transmits 320 texts from the statements of hadith scholars in Basra from the generation of al-Bukhari's teachers, especially Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan and Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi. Most of the texts in the book are not found in other sources, which is one of the book's distinctive features.
The work of the editor Muhammad al-Tabrani includes an engaging 100-page introduction in which he provided biographies of al-Fallas, his students, his teachers and other scholars of his generation. The book is filled with scholarly comments by al-Fallas along with insights about hadiths, their narrators and their defects. It also contains many Fiqh opinions of Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan, whom al-Fallas greatly revered. It is a beautiful book that gives the reader a vivid historical glimpse into the science of hadith and its scholars during its golden age in Basra.
