Imam Badr al-Din al-Ayni's book, "Umdat al-Qari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari," is among the best commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari. In fact, it is a comprehensive fiqh encyclopedia that makes it unnecessary for the student to refer to many other sources. The commentary is distinguished by its combination of accurate linguistic analysis, deep fiqh deduction, and extensive knowledge of the opinions of previous scholars, making it a fundamental reference for jurists and hadith scholars throughout the ages.
In his commentary, al-Ayni was keen on explaining the meanings of the prophetic hadiths, clarifying any uncommon words they contained, explaining their purposes, and extracting fiqh rulings from them. He also mentioned the differences of opinion among scholars on each issue, clarifying the point of contention and giving preference to the most likely opinion with evidence. He did not limit himself to the fiqh aspect but also addressed the linguistic, rhetorical, and historical aspects related to the hadiths, which enriches the reader's culture and increases their understanding of the religious texts.
Undoubtedly, "Umdat al-Qari" is one of the greatest services that scholars have provided to the noble prophetic hadith. It opens wide horizons for the reader to understand Sahih al-Bukhari and helps them utilize its scientific treasures and act upon its rulings.
