This is a well-known commentary on the poetry collection of the great Abbasid poet Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi (303-354 AH), authored by Abu al-'Ala' al-Ma'arri (363-449 AH), who is one of the most prominent poets, writers, and critics in the history of Arabic literature, known for his deep thought, vast knowledge, and precise analyses.
Abu al-'Ala' al-Ma'arri clarifies difficult vocabulary, explains obscure verses, and reveals the deep meanings in al-Mutanabbi's poems. In his commentary, al-Ma'arri also addresses the linguistic, grammatical, rhetorical, and prosodic aspects of al-Mutanabbi's poetry, and highlights the artistic imagery, metaphors, and similes used by the poet. The book was named "Al-Lam' al-'Azizi" in reference to al-Aziz Billah al-Fatimi, and it is said that he wrote it at the request of one of the ministers.
We are pleased to present you the critical edition by Muhammad Sa'id al-Mawlawi, published by the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in an elegant three-volume edition that reflects the effort invested in producing this heritage work. It includes useful annotations in footnotes and most of the Harakat on the text.
